2013 Harold Maready Legacy Scholarship Winners Named

Lakeland, FL (June 1, 2013) – The Board of Trustees for The Schools of McKeel Academy announced the award of two academic scholarships to Class of 2013 McKeel Academy of Technology seniors.  The scholarships were awarded during the school graduation ceremony.  Kayla Wilson (pictured right) received a $7,500 scholarship to pursue her college dreams at the University of South Florida and Karissa Maze received $4,000 to pursue her  healthcare degree at University of Central Florida.

In 2007, The Harold Maready Legacy Scholarship Fund was established to honor the founding principal of McKeel Academy of Technology who now serves as the superintendent of The Schools of McKeel Academy.  Employees of the schools, parents, board members, and the community contribute to the scholarship fund to invest in the education dreams of our students, and strengthen the McKeel legacy.  Scholarships are available annually to students who have attended McKeel Academy of Technology since middle school.  Both Karissa Maze and Kayla Wilson started in the 3rd grade at McKeel Elementary Academy when the school opened.

The award selection process is competitive.  Graduating seniors write a letter to share what legacy they leave McKeel and how the school has prepared them for the future.  A selection committee judges the anonymous entries, and from those finalists, a panel from the Board of Trustees interviews and selects the winners.  Since the scholarship fund was established, scholarships have been awarded totaling $27,500 to nine McKeel seniors with hopes to continue to award scholarships to more students in the future.
